Techno Viking - an internet legend makes history

Techno Viking - eine Internetlegende schreibt Geschichte 3 Minuten lesen

A meme before there were memes: The Techno Viking has long since advanced to become the quiet, energetic hero of the internet. The clip with the giant dancer was recorded at the Berlin Fuck Parade in 2000. Today, the Love Parade, like its counterpart the Fuck Parade, has largely fallen into oblivion. The Techno Viking, however, is still on everyone's lips - and shows how anyone can become a random YouTube star.

Trouble at the Fuck Parade 2000

The late 1990s and early 2000s were wild and techno-dominated. Techno parades took place in many major European cities, with fans of electronic music dancing wildly through the streets. Probably the most well-known event of this kind was the Berlin Loveparade , which became sadly famous in 2010. Since 1997 there has also been the Fuckparade, which sees itself as a counterpoint to the Loveparade and takes place every year in Berlin - and still does today. The Fuckparade 2000 had an extraordinarily high number of visitors. He was also among the visitors who danced casually through Rosenthaler Strasse: the Techno-Viking.

A chronicle of what happened: What actually happened?

The artist and photographer Matthias Fritsch went with a friend to film the Love Parade. The annual event made headlines every time and was documented by many people. Fritsch found himself on Rosenthaler Strasse, where the fuck parade was in full swing. The dancers, which included a young woman with a light blue wig (yes, that's what they wore to ravens in those days!), seemed interesting enough to him to be filmed. Without further ado, Fritsch began to film the dancers. After a few seconds, out of the blue, a man rushes at the dancer with the blue wig. It appears he was bumped into himself. But it is only an assumption, because what exactly happened cannot be inferred from the recordings. Suddenly he appears: a tall, muscular man with a blond goatee beard. He scares away the man who bumped into the woman in the blue wig and wags his index finger at him.

Then our Viking-style hero starts dancing to the beats. People follow him like the Pied Piper of Hamelin . A man hands the Techno Viking a bottle of water, which he gratefully drinks before handing it back. Then someone hands the giant a flyer, which he looks at carefully before continuing to dance.

If you're now wondering what happened to the dancer with the blue wig, you can breathe a sigh of relief. She was not harmed, nor was she particularly upset. Therefore, the conclusion is forced that the whole action was not meant in a bad way and that the bumper was not a bully at all, but rather a victim of the circumstances himself.

How it went

The video was uploaded to YouTube and has since become a real classic. Numerous parodies have emerged from it. A statue of the Techno-Viking was even erected in Japan. In short, the blond giant has risen to real fame. However, he did not like the hype about himself, because in 2009 he sent Matthias Fritsch a cease-and-desist declaration . Fritsch should kindly remove the video from the network. The filmmaker had to pay the techno-Viking a sum of 8,000 euros - but the video can still be viewed on YouTube.

The secret of the unknown techno fan

We would like to know the name of Techno Viking and what he does. In 2015, an article appeared in the Irish magazine "Waterford Whispers News" in which the techno-viking was presented as a former woodcutter with a degree in biology . On closer inspection, however, the online newspaper turned out to be a satirical website - the report was therefore a duck . To this day, nobody knows anything about the man with the steel muscles, who seems to have a strong sense of justice and who also likes to dance in the street. What is he doing today? Is he still hanging out at the Fuck Parade?
